Once a year, highland tribes from across Papua gather in the remote Baliem Valley to celebrate their culture through war dances, rituals, and traditional ceremonies. For photographers, this festival is a dream: colourful costumes, dramatic mountain backdrops, and raw, authentic moments that can’t be staged anywhere else.
Sentani Airport (DJJ)
Wamena Airport (WMX)
6 August – 10 August 2026 (5D4N)
This workshop gives you exclusive access to these remarkable scenes, along with guided sessions in nearby villages and landscapes. Spaces are limited to ensure a small group experience, so each participant can receive personal guidance and have room to photograph freely.
We will meet at Wamena Airport at midday. After checking in at the hotel, lunch will be served and there will be time to settle in. In the late afternoon, we will head out for our first photography session, capturing the sunset over the wide and beautiful Baliem Valley.
The second day will be dedicated to the Baliem Valley Festival. We will spend the full day following the traditional rituals and capturing the vibrant celebrations of the local tribes. A lunch box will be provided at the festival grounds so we can remain close to the action without missing a moment. To make the most of this unique opportunity, we will also arrange a few of the most striking and colourful tribes to pose as our portrait models. In the evening, we will enjoy a proper dinner together before returning to the hotel to rest and recharge for the following day.
After breakfast at the hotel, we will visit a Dani tribe village. Here we will photograph village life, traditional war re-enactments, and dances. A stone-burning ceremony with the local people will also be part of the day, giving us more chances for portrait and cultural photography.
In the afternoon, we will return to the festival site for further pictures before heading back to the hotel. Dinner will be at a local restaurant nearby.
After breakfast, we will visit another tribal village, where we will photograph scenes of daily life and traditional practices such as hunting. This will be a chance to capture authentic portraits and cultural moments in their natural setting. In the afternoon, we will return to the Baliem Valley Festival to enjoy further photography opportunities and witness the closing ceremony of this remarkable event. After dinner, we will head back to the hotel to rest and take time to review the collection of images gathered over the past few days.
On the last morning, we will check out of the hotel after breakfast. Before heading to the airport, there will be a short farewell photo session to capture planes at the end of Wamena’s runway with the valley in the background. Afterwards, we will be taken to the airport for our onward flights, bringing the workshop to a close.
