Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Sorong

Upon arrival at Sorong Airport, you’ll be met and transferred for a relaxed lunch in town before boarding the 2:00 PM ferry to Waigeo (Waisai). After settling into the guesthouse, the group will enjoy an easy afternoon of exploratory birding around the surrounding area—perfect for warming up your lenses and getting a feel for the local species. The day concludes with dinner and a comfortable overnight stay, readying you for the photographic opportunities ahead.

Day 2 Wilson’s Bird of Paradise & Lowland Birding

The day begins well before dawn with a 4:30 AM departure to the famed Wilson’s Bird of Paradise site. After a short walk through the forest, you’ll settle into a concealed hide for an exclusive photography session during the prime display window. This is a rare opportunity to capture one of the world’s most coveted birds in soft morning light. The rest of the morning continues with lowland birding, targeting kingfishers, parrots, and cockatoos. Following lunch and a short rest, the afternoon offers further photographic chances with species such as mynas, lorikeets, hornbills, and frogmouths before returning for dinner and a quiet evening.

Day 3Red Bird of Paradise & Transfer to Mayalibit Bay

Another early start sees you heading to the Red Bird of Paradise display site, where males perform their striking courtship dances high in the canopy. With the guidance of local experts, you’ll position yourself for the best possible photographic angles of this dramatic spectacle. After returning to the guesthouse to pack, the group transfers by boat to the serene Mayalibit Bay. The remainder of the day is spent settling in and enjoying a relaxed evening amid a more remote and untouched environment.

Day 4Mayalibit Bay Birding & Wildlife

You’ll begin the morning exploring the forests around Mayalibit Bay, with key photographic targets including the magnificent Victoria Crowned Pigeon and Papuan Hornbill, along with a variety of regional endemics. After lunch and a midday break at the homestay, the afternoon features a gentle nature walk offering opportunities to photograph additional bird species and possibly local mammals in their natural habitat. The day ends with dinner and another peaceful night in this pristine setting.

Day 5Transfer to Sorong

After breakfast, the group boards a boat back to Waisai, keeping cameras ready for potential sightings of eagles, sparrowhawks and seabirds along the journey. Lunch is taken in Waisai before the 2:00 PM ferry returns you to Sorong. Upon arrival, you’ll check into a comfortable hotel for the night—an ideal moment to review your images and prepare for departure.

Day 6Farewell & Departure

Your final morning is relaxed, with breakfast followed by a transfer to the airport for your onward flight. It’s a gentle close to a rewarding week of world-class birding and wildlife photography in one of the most extraordinary regions on Earth.
